American actress Julia Stiles paid tribute to her late co-star Heath Ledger in an emotional performance on Dancing with the Stars, reuniting with members of the original ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ cast to celebrate the beloved actor’s legacy.
During the show’s Dedication Night, Stiles and her professional dance partner, Ezra Sosa, performed a heartfelt contemporary routine to Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” the song famously featured in the 1999 romantic comedy.
As the performance came to an end, Stiles placed a rose beside a photograph of herself and Ledger, while the poem she recited in the film played in the background. Moments later, her former co-stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gabrielle Union, Larisa Oleynik, Susan May Pratt, and Andrew Keegan joined her on the dance floor, turning the tribute into an emotional reunion.
Why Julia Stiles Chose ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ for Her Tribute
Reflecting on her experience working with Ledger, Stiles expressed how much the film and her late co-star meant to her.
“Making ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ with him was such a special moment in time,” she said in a clip shared ahead of the performance. “It’s amazing that people still care about that movie, and it’s just sad that we can’t celebrate it with him.”
The reunion also highlighted the lasting friendship between the former cast members. Ahead of the episode, the actors shared a video showing their support for Stiles as she prepared for the emotional performance.
Stiles also recalled the impact Ledger had on her during filming, describing the experience as one filled with cherished memories. The tribute offered a reminder of how their on-screen chemistry and the film’s memorable moments continue to resonate with audiences decades later.
What Is ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ About?
Released in 1999, ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ is a teen romantic comedy loosely inspired by William Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the Shrew.’ Directed by Gil Junger, the film follows sisters Kat Stratford, played by Stiles, and Bianca Stratford, portrayed by Oleynik.
Bianca wants to start dating, but their strict father will not allow her to do so until her older sister, Kat, also has a boyfriend. The situation takes an unexpected turn when Patrick Verona, played by Ledger, is persuaded to pursue Kat, setting the stage for the film’s romance and comedy.
The film also featured Gordon-Levitt as Cameron James, Union as Chastity Church, Keegan as Joey Donner, and Pratt as Mandella.
Remembering Heath Ledger’s Legacy
Ledger died in January 2008 at the age of 28. Later that year, he posthumously won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight.’
Although Ledger’s career included acclaimed performances in several films, his role as Patrick Verona in ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ remains a fan favorite.
Stiles’ tribute brought the cast back together to remember their late co-star, celebrating not only the film’s enduring popularity but also the memories and connections they shared with Ledger.
More than a nostalgic reunion, the moment served as a heartfelt reminder that a film’s impact can extend far beyond the screen, keeping the memory of the people behind it alive for generations.
