It&rsquo;s been circulating through phones all over Cairo, with messages like:
&ldquo;Hey, it&rsquo;s my Egyptian number. I missed you! Can we meetup?&rdquo;
And just a few hours--days in some cases--later:

Cue chaos. Women lost their minds, partners got interrogated, and in one case, we even heard a couple nearly got divorced because of &ldquo;SOFYA.&rdquo; The mystery woman had everyone questioning reality &mdash; and each other.
But thanks to some social media digging, we&rsquo;ve got answers.
SOFYA isn&rsquo;t a person.
It turns out, this is part of a marketing campaign using geographical SMS targeting &mdash; meaning, if you were physically near a certain location, you&rsquo;d automatically get this message. It&rsquo;s a location-triggered activation.
The technique behind it? It&rsquo;s called guerrilla marketing &mdash; a bold, disruptive strategy designed to stir curiosity, create buzz, and spark conversation without revealing too much.
And boy, did it work.
But while the campaign was undeniably clever &mdash; playing on emotional cues and a sense of urgency &mdash; not everyone&rsquo;s laughing. The blurred lines between marketing and manipulation are raising some eyebrows. Is it ethical to weaponize personal messaging styles to lure people into checking out a brand or place? Especially when it leads to real relationship conflict?
For now, SOFYA remains a mystery, we don&rsquo;t know yet. But we&rsquo;ll be watching.
One thing is clear: this won&rsquo;t be the last time a brand tries to hack our trust &mdash; and our phones &mdash; to get our attention.
