But over the years, a curious rumor has circulated online: that Katy Perry was originally meant to sing Kimbra&rsquo;s part. So&hellip; is it true?</p>
<p>Short answer: no.</p>
<p>There&rsquo;s no record, studio leak, or credible source confirming that Katy Perry was ever attached to the project. Gotye wrote the track in his home studio in Melbourne and specifically brought in New Zealand singer Kimbra to deliver the emotional counterpoint &mdash; which went on to become a defining part of the song&rsquo;s identity.</p>
<p>The rumor seems to stem from a mix of fan theories, YouTube mashups, and the kind of internet whisper networks that turn &ldquo;what ifs&rdquo; into &ldquo;did you know?&rdquo; But rest assured: Katy Perry had nothing to do with the creation or original recording of &ldquo;Somebody That I Used to Know.&rdquo;</p>
