A sequel to the beloved 1997 romantic comedy "My Best Friend&rsquo;s Wedding" is officially in early development&mdash;and it's already generating buzz.
According to Variety and The Wrap, Past Lives writer-director Celine Song has been tapped to write the script for "My Best Friend&rsquo;s Wedding." While a director has yet to be confirmed, the project marks a surprising&mdash;yet welcome&mdash;return to one of the most iconic rom-coms of the 1990s.
Could Julia Roberts Return?
Casting details remain under wraps, but actor Dermot Mulroney, who starred opposite Julia Roberts in the original, recently hinted at the possibility of a sequel. Speaking to New York Magazine, he revealed, &ldquo;There is talk of a sequel,&rdquo; fueling hopes that Roberts might reprise her role as Julianne Potter.
The original film followed Julianne as she tried to sabotage the wedding of her longtime best friend Michael (played by Mulroney) after realizing she was in love with him. The film also starred Cameron Diaz as Michael&rsquo;s fianc&eacute;e Kimmy, Rupert Everett as Julianne&rsquo;s confidant George, and featured Carrie Preston and Philip Bosco in supporting roles.
A Nostalgic Classic with a New Voice
Celine Song&mdash;whose debut Past Lives earned critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination&mdash;brings a fresh and emotionally nuanced perspective to the sequel. With her talent for capturing raw emotion and intimate storytelling, the new film could strike the perfect balance between heartfelt drama and the signature charm of the original.
Reflecting on his experience filming the 1997 hit, Mulroney said, &ldquo;Oh my gosh, the whole thing was a dream. I knew even when I got the audition for it with Julia&mdash;waiting in line with a whole bunch of other guys&mdash;that I got the role. I knew and all of Hollywood knew, it was going to be an exceptional movie.&rdquo;
No release date has been announced yet, but fans of the original are already wondering: nearly 30 years later, where are Julianne and Michael now&mdash;and what happens next?
