Nicolas Cage is returning to the comic book genre in the upcoming series 'Spider-Noir,' taking on a darker role as a private investigator in a noir-inspired version of the Spider-Man world.
Set in 1930s New York, the series offers a more grounded take on the superhero story, combining elements of detective drama with comic book themes.
Plot
The character of Spider-Man Noir exists in a darker version of the traditional Spider-Man story, set in a city shaped by crime, corruption and political power.
Cage plays a private investigator navigating this environment, caught between crime and justice while dealing with personal struggles. Early footage suggests the series focuses more on character and atmosphere than on traditional superhero action.

Release date
Spider-Noir is due to be released on 27 May 2026.
The series will be available in two formats: a black-and-white version inspired by classic noir cinema, and a full-colour version.
Two ways to watch
The black-and-white version aims to recreate the style of 1940s noir films, using shadow and contrast to emphasise atmosphere. The colour version presents a more conventional viewing experience.

Alongside Cage, the series stars Li Jun Li, Lamorne Morris and Brendan Gleeson.
From comics to screen
Spider-Man Noir first appeared in comics in 2009. Created by David Hine and Fabrice Sapolsky, this version of Peter Parker operates as a vigilante during the Prohibition era.
Unlike the traditional Spider-Man, this version is portrayed as more aggressive in his approach to crime.

Previous roles
Cage has previously appeared in comic book adaptations, including the film 'Ghost Rider,' in which he played a supernatural anti-hero.

A different Spider-Man
Executive producer Christopher Miller said the character differs from previous versions of Spider-Man.
&ldquo;This character's very different from the Peter Parker from the movies. He's older and jaded, and not afraid to punch a guy in the face drunkenly.&rdquo;
The series is expected to explore a darker and more mature interpretation of the character.
