NileFM&rsquo;s upcoming &ldquo;REEL vs REAL&rdquo; podcast puts cinema&rsquo;s most romantic stories under the microscope, examining the gap between on-screen love and the realities of relationships.
British Egyptian actor, director, writer, and psychological acting coach Mel Masry has questioned the way romantic films portray relationships, asking audiences to consider what happens once the credits roll.
Speaking on NileFM&rsquo;s &ldquo;The Big Drive&rdquo; with Zeinab and Sami, Masry examined the idealised imagery often used to present romance, from couples embracing in the rain to picturesque beaches and seemingly perfect settings.
Cinema, he suggested, often presents love as &ldquo;a bunch of roses&rdquo;, while overlooking the everyday realities of long-term relationships.
&ldquo;They don&rsquo;t make a film about what happens after the credits,&rdquo; Masry said, referring to the arguments, disagreements, responsibilities, and ordinary moments that form part of real relationships.
&ldquo;You don&rsquo;t see any film out there&rdquo; about what happens &ldquo;between the four walls between the two,&rdquo; he added, highlighting the gap between cinematic romance and everyday life.
Even &lsquo;Based On A True Story&rsquo; Can Be Enhanced
Masry also discussed how films based on real events can reshape reality for dramatic effect.
&ldquo;You&rsquo;re not gonna fit 50 years or 20 years in just two hours,&rdquo; he said, pointing out that filmmakers inevitably condense, select and dramatise real experiences for the screen.
Despite questioning some of the conventions of romantic cinema, Masry said he continues to enjoy the genre, naming &ldquo;The Vow&rdquo; and &ldquo;Endless Love&rdquo; among the films he returns to.
Jack And Rose Under The Microscope
One of cinema&rsquo;s most famous couples could also face the &ldquo;REEL vs REAL&rdquo; treatment.
Asked which fictional couple he would most like to analyse, Masry chose Jack and Rose from &ldquo;Titanic&rdquo;.
While their relationship remains one of cinema&rsquo;s most recognisable romances, Masry noted that the characters knew each other for only a few days, leaving little room for the practical conversations that shape real-life relationships.
Where would they live? How would they work? How would they manage family, responsibilities and their future together?
These are the questions romantic films often leave unanswered, Masry suggested, focusing instead on the intensity of falling in love.
Are We Chasing A Cinematic Version Of Love?
Masry also considered whether people can remain in relationships while trying to recreate the kind of romance they have seen on screen.
He suggested that some audiences can become attached to the fantasy presented by films, while others recognise that &ldquo;this is just a fantasy. It&rsquo;s just a movie.&rdquo;
Using an analogy, Masry said relationships require more than the simple ingredients often presented in romantic stories.
&ldquo;There is more ingredients in the pan than just water to make the soup,&rdquo; he said.
