1. Reviving Adel Emam’s Cinematic Legacy
Released in 1991, “Shams El Zanati” is one of Adel Emam’s memorable cinematic works. Set during the Second World War, the film follows a group of men hired to defend a remote desert oasis after it is attacked by armed men led by Marshal Barai.
Al-Shaikh Othman travels to Cairo to acquire weapons and recruits Shams El Zanati and his companions to fight back against the attackers. The original film featured a distinguished cast, including Mahmoud Hemida, Sawsan Badr, Mahmoud El Gendy, and Mostafa Metwally.
Bringing the story back to the big screen more than three decades later offers an opportunity to revisit a beloved piece of Egyptian cinema. With Mohamed Emam taking on the new project, audiences are eager to see how he will honor his father’s legacy while giving the story a new identity.
2. Discovering Shams El Zanati’s Origins
One of the most intriguing aspects of “Shams El Zanati: Ayam El Shakawa” is its prequel storyline.
Rather than retelling the events of the original film, the new installment explores the earlier stages of Shams El Zanati’s life, tracing his upbringing, the experiences that shaped his character, and his relationships with his friends and companions.
This approach gives audiences the chance to discover what happened before the events of the 1991 film and gain a deeper understanding of the character. It also raises questions about how the new story will connect with the original and whether it will reveal details that change how viewers perceive the iconic hero.
3. A New Cast Bringing Fresh Energy
The film introduces a new lineup of actors, with Mohamed Emam joined by Bassem Samra, Yasmine Raeis, Ahmed Abdelhamid, Mahmoud Moghny, and Enjy Kiwan.
The new cast brings a different dynamic to a story familiar to longtime fans. Audiences will be eager to see how the actors portray the characters and relationships that shape Shams El Zanati’s world.
For Mohamed Emam, the project also presents a unique opportunity to lead a film connected to his father’s legacy while establishing his own interpretation of the central character.

4. A Nostalgic Journey for Two Generations
Part of the excitement surrounding “Shams El Zanati: Ayam El Shakawa” comes from its potential to connect different generations of moviegoers.
For those who remember the original, the new film offers a chance to revisit a familiar cinematic world and rediscover the characters that made it memorable. For younger audiences who may not have seen Adel Emam’s version, it provides an opportunity to explore a story that has remained part of Egyptian cinema.
The new installment may also encourage viewers to return to the 1991 film and compare the two versions, from their storytelling and characters to their different cinematic approaches.
5. What Will Be Different This Time?
Perhaps the biggest question is how the new film will distinguish itself from the original.
With a prequel storyline, a different cast, and a new creative team, “Shams El Zanati: Ayam El Shakawa” has the opportunity to explore familiar characters from a fresh perspective.
Will the film preserve the spirit of the original while introducing its own identity? How will the earlier events shape Shams El Zanati’s character, and what new details will audiences discover about the people who influenced his journey?
These unanswered questions are part of what makes the film intriguing. Until more details are revealed, audiences will have to wait to see how the new installment balances nostalgia with a fresh cinematic experience.
