When does romantic persistence become obsession? Cinema has often portrayed a man’s refusal to give up as proof of love, suggesting that determination will eventually win a woman’s heart. But what happens when his feelings are not returned? In ‘Cairo Station’ (1958), Egyptian director Youssef Chahine challenges this romantic ideal, exposing the dangers of confusing desire with possession.
In a new episode of the ‘REEL vs REAL’ podcast, airing every Sunday at 5pm on NileFM’s YouTube channel, Mel Masry revisits the Egyptian classic to explore how cinema shapes our understanding of romance, rejection and the difference between devotion and entitlement.

Set in Cairo’s bustling central railway station, the film follows Kenawi, a newspaper seller who becomes obsessed with Hanuma, a lively drinks seller who does not return his feelings. Hanuma is in love with Abu Siri, a porter who is fighting for better working conditions for his colleagues. As Kenawi’s fantasies collide with reality, his fixation takes a disturbing turn.
Through Kenawi’s obsession, Chahine turns a familiar romantic trope on its head. In many love stories, a man who continues pursuing a woman despite her rejection is portrayed as devoted and determined, with his persistence eventually rewarded. "Cairo Station", however, exposes the danger of this narrative, showing what can happen when a person’s desires overshadow another person’s freedom to choose.
What makes the film particularly compelling is that Kenawi is not presented as a straightforward villain. His loneliness and longing reveal a troubled character, but understanding his pain does not excuse his actions. As his fixation escalates towards violence, the film exposes the destructive consequences of entitlement and an inability to accept rejection.
This distinction lies at the heart of the episode. Devotion means caring for someone while respecting their choices, even when those choices do not include you. Possession, by contrast, treats affection as a debt, as though loving someone creates an obligation for the other person to reciprocate.
The distinction remains relevant in a culture where romantic persistence has often been celebrated in films, television dramas and popular storytelling. The idea that a man should keep trying after being rejected, or that a woman should interpret relentless pursuit as proof of genuine affection, can blur the boundaries between romance and disrespect.
More than six decades after its release, ‘Cairo Station’ remains compelling because it challenges these assumptions. Its themes also resonate in the age of social media, where constant monitoring, repeated attempts to attract someone's attention and anxiety over romantic interest can sometimes be mistaken for meaningful connection.
Ultimately, the film reminds audiences that wanting someone does not give you a claim over them. Missing someone does not make you their partner, and strong feelings do not override another person’s right to say no.
Through ‘REEL vs REAL’, Mel Masry invites audiences to reconsider the romantic narratives they have grown up with and question whether behaviours celebrated on screen would be healthy in real life. Genuine love is not about refusing to let go until someone gives in. It begins with recognising another person’s independence, respecting their decisions and allowing them to choose freely.
