Her latest experience marks a new chapter in her professional journey, introducing her to a different film industry, a new dialect, and an opportunity to connect with Egyptian audiences.
In an exclusive interview with NileFM, Joud Alsufyani opens up about her first experience in Egyptian cinema, working alongside some of Egypt's familiar faces, her approach to choosing roles, the characters she hopes to explore, and what audiences can expect from her upcoming projects.
What was the moment that made you realise you wanted to become an actress?
I feel like acting chose me before I chose it.
I’ve always been fascinated by people, their emotions, the way they speak, and the little details that make everyone different. I loved the idea of stepping into someone else’s life and experiencing the world through their eyes.
But the moment I truly knew acting was what I wanted to do was when I stood in front of the camera and realised I wasn’t just playing a character, I was actually feeling everything she was going through.
That’s when I understood that acting wasn’t just a career for me. It was a way to discover different sides of myself.

Can you take us behind the scenes of “Wala Kan Ala El-Bal” and tell us what this journey has been like?
“Wala Kan Ala El-Bal” will always have a special place in my heart because it was my first experience in Egyptian cinema.
Stepping into a different industry, working with a different dialect, and adapting to a new environment was both exciting and challenging.
What made the experience even more special was the people I worked with. There was such great energy on set, and I learned so much from the cast and crew.
The beautiful thing is that I never really felt like an outsider. It reminded me that art connects people regardless of where they come from.
I came back to Saudi Arabia with even more passion for what I do and excitement for what’s next.

What does making your Egyptian cinema debut mean to you personally and professionally?
On a personal level, it means a lot to me. I grew up watching Egyptian films, so becoming part of that industry feels incredibly special.
Professionally, I see it as a responsibility just as much as an achievement.
I don’t want to be recognised simply as a Saudi actress appearing in an Egyptian film. I want to be recognised for my performance, my talent, and what I bring to the character.
I believe an artist shouldn’t be limited by geography. Talent has no nationality, and storytelling has no borders.
How did you feel about working alongside Nour El Nabawy, Yasmina El Abd, and Ashraf Abdel Baky?
I was genuinely excited, especially because this was a new chapter in my career, and I was surrounded by such talented actors.
But more than anything, I wanted to prove that I deserved to be there.
I didn’t want to simply be another name in the cast. I wanted to bring something meaningful to my character and leave an impression on the audience.
Working alongside actors with different experiences and approaches was a great learning opportunity.
I think one of the best things that can happen to an actor is being surrounded by people who inspire you to challenge yourself and become better.
Do you find comedy more challenging than drama?
I actually think comedy is much harder than people imagine.
In drama, you have more space to express emotions, but in comedy, sometimes one look, one reaction, or even a moment of silence can be funnier than an entire conversation. Timing is everything.
And I think the biggest challenge is not trying too hard to be funny. You have to be completely honest in the moment and let the humour happen naturally.
I’ve always loved drama, but comedy allowed me to discover a different side of myself, and I enjoyed it more than I expected.
I’m really excited for audiences to see that side of me.
How do you see Saudi-Egyptian collaborations shaping the future of Arab cinema?
I think we’re living in a really exciting time for Arab cinema, especially with the incredible growth happening in Saudi Arabia.
Egypt has such a rich cinematic history and decades of experience, while Saudi Arabia is bringing fresh perspectives, new talent, and stories that deserve to be told.
For me, collaboration isn’t just about having actors from different countries in the same film. It’s about exchanging experiences, cultures, and different ways of telling stories.
I hope we reach a point where Arab cinema is recognised globally for the quality of its storytelling, rather than being defined by the nationality of its cast or where a film was produced.

How have you evolved as an actress from “Al Mirath” and “Khareef Al Qalb” to your Egyptian film debut?
I think I’ve grown a lot, not just as an actress but also as a person.
When I started with “Al Mirath,” I was learning how to connect with the camera, understand my characters, and build confidence in myself.
With every project, I started to realise that acting is so much more than memorising lines and expressing emotions. It’s about understanding human behaviour and the psychology behind every character.
Today, I listen more, observe more, and I’m not afraid to experiment or make mistakes.
One of the most important things I’ve learned is that the moment an actor believes they have nothing left to learn is the moment they stop growing.
What did being part of “Taash Al Awda” mean to you early in your career?
“Taash” isn’t just a television show for us in Saudi Arabia. It’s part of our culture, our memories, and the history of Saudi television. So being part of its return was something I was genuinely proud of.
That experience taught me a lot about the importance of simplicity and authenticity in acting, especially when you’re working on a show that audiences have loved for generations.
I think being part of such an iconic production early in my career helped me understand that every opportunity matters, regardless of how big or small the role is.
Sometimes the smallest experiences teach you the biggest lessons.

What matters most to you when choosing a role?
All of those things matter, but what attracts me the most is a character that scares me a little.
If I read a script and immediately know exactly how I’m going to play the character, then maybe it’s not challenging enough for me.
I love characters that make me question things, research, and understand why they behave the way they do.
Of course, the script and the director’s vision are incredibly important because even the strongest character needs the right storytelling.
I’m not looking for roles that simply make me look good on screen. I’m looking for roles that make me a better actress.
Which role has challenged you the most, and which has revealed an unexpected side of you?
One of my most challenging experiences was definitely “Halat Nadera,” where I played two completely different characters, Yara and Sarah. Sarah, in particular, was emotionally and technically challenging because she couldn’t speak.
I had to communicate everything she was feeling, her fear, her emotions, and her internal struggles, without relying on dialogue.
That experience taught me that sometimes silence can be more powerful than words.
As for a side of me that audiences might not expect, I would say comedy and my more spontaneous, playful side.
I don’t want people to associate me with just one type of character. I want to keep surprising them, and honestly, I want to keep surprising myself too.
What can you tell us about your upcoming projects and the characters you hope to explore?
There are a few upcoming projects that I’m really excited about, but I prefer to talk about them when the time is right.
What I can say is that I’m at a stage in my career where I want to be bolder with my choices.
I want to step outside the image audiences might already have of me and explore characters that are more complex, unpredictable, and even controversial. I’m drawn to characters who aren’t necessarily likeable or perfect. I love the idea of playing someone who makes the audience question whether they love her or hate her.
I’m also very passionate about exploring more opportunities in cinema, whether that’s in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, or hopefully internationally in the future.
My goal has never been to appear in as many projects as possible.
I want every role I play to leave a different impression. I don’t just want to be seen. I want to be remembered.
