The Black Phone is a horror/thriller movie directed by Scott Derrickson; the renowned horror director of "Sinister" and "The Exorcism of Emily Rose". He has also directed the first installment of the superhero movie Doctor Strange, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, which was the first step to incorporate the horror genre into Marvel movies.
The Black Phone stars Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, and Madeleine McGraw. The movie is based on the short story under the same title, written by&nbsp;Joe Hill, Stephen King&rsquo;s talented son; Joe Hill is also a producer in the movie.

The movie is set in the 70s in North Denver. It follows &ldquo;The Grabber&rdquo;, a local criminal who drives around in a black van with black balloons kidnapping teenagers and eventually killing them. The movie follows Finny, a 13-year-old boy, who gets bullied at his school and is the latest victim. He is kept in the Grabber's basement with nothing but a disconnected black phone that suddenly starts ringing and acts as a bridge between Finny and the previous victims. With their help and his sister&rsquo;s dreams as her guide to reach him, Finny might actually have a chance against the Grabber.&nbsp;

The Black Phone is smartly edited, as the audience can barely see the Grabber in the first third of the movie, but they can definitely feel his presence lurking in the background. When the audience get to see what happened to the previous victims, the scenes switch to a&nbsp; grainy 16mm camera, which gives a vintage, nostalgic look to the movie. The unveiling of the location of The Grabber&rsquo;s house is masterfully directed as the ending is one big epic conclusion where all characters come together and try to stop the evil circling their hometown. The Black Phone is not only well edited, but it also has a mesmerizing soundtrack made by a trendy composer, Mark Korven, who made the soundtracks of The Witch (2019), The Lighthouse (2019) and In the Tall Grass (2019). The soundtrack sets a very eerie tone and builds a creepy atmosphere.&nbsp;Ethan Hawke&rsquo;s performance is enticing even though he has little screen time. His mask resembles the theatre symbols of the comedy and tragedy to reflect his emotions under it. The child-acting in the movie is astonishing as they carry out most of the movie on their own.
