Egypt is stepping up its climate efforts as it prepares for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil next year. Acting Minister of Environment Dr. Manal Awad met with senior officials to review the country&rsquo;s plans, aiming to build on Egypt&rsquo;s recent progress and strengthen its role on the global stage.
The Central Department for Climate Change is playing a central role in these preparations, ensuring Egypt delivers on its climate commitments, works closely with international partners, and moves forward with its National Climate Change Strategy 2050.
Sharpening Climate Action Plans
Dr. Awad highlighted how ministries are coordinating their climate plans under Cabinet directives. She reviewed Egypt&rsquo;s progress in meeting international obligations, including an assessment report on ministries&rsquo; readiness and a strategic adaptation framework being developed in Qena and Kafr El-Sheikh with support from GIZ. Training programs will also be launched to help government staff strengthen their skills in climate adaptation and mitigation.
Moving Toward a Digital Climate System
Dr. Ali Abu Senna, CEO of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, announced that Egypt is digitizing its Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system. This new platform will track greenhouse gas emissions from key sectors such as energy, industry, agriculture, and waste. It will also monitor the effects of climate change, including rising temperatures and irregular rainfall.
Meanwhile, Eng. Sherif Abdel Rahim, Assistant Minister for Climate Policies, stressed the importance of Egypt&rsquo;s climate risk map, which identifies the most vulnerable areas and guides development planning.

Global Partnerships in Action
Egypt is working closely with international partners such as the EU, UNDP, the French Development Agency, the Green Climate Fund, and others. These collaborations support renewable energy expansion, adaptation planning, and the phase-out of harmful industrial chemicals.
Renewed Commitments Ahead of COP30
Egypt has been updating its climate commitments regularly. In June 2023, it raised its target for renewable energy, pledging to generate 42% of its power from clean sources by 2030.
From COP27 to COP30
Egypt enters COP30 with strong momentum. At COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh in 2022, the country pushed for global action on adaptation, launched the Sharm El-Sheikh Implementation Plan, and played a key role in creating the Loss and Damage Fund to support vulnerable nations.
Now, as COP30 approaches, Egypt is positioning itself not just as a host of past talks but as a regional leader in climate diplomacy, ensuring its strategies and projects match global goals.
