Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and Dean Norris have paid tribute to actor RJ Mitte, who has died aged 34.

Mitte, best known for playing Walter White Jr in the Emmy-winning television drama, was also a disability rights advocate who used his experience of living with cerebral palsy to promote awareness and inclusion.

His death was announced by his representatives on Monday, 12 October. He died in Brownsville, Texas. The cause of death was not immediately established in initial reports.

Mitte played Walter White Jr, the son of Cranston’s character, Walter White, throughout the series’ five-season run from 2008 to 2013.

The series won 16 Primetime Emmy Awards, including two for outstanding drama series. Mitte was also part of the cast that won the Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series in 2014.

Following news of his death, Mitte’s former co-stars remembered his talent, kindness and contribution to the series.

Bryan Cranston Remembers His On-Screen Son

Cranston, who played Mitte’s on-screen father, shared an emotional tribute on Instagram, describing himself as being in “deep despair”.

“I met him when he was only 14 years old when he was cast as Walter White Jr, a part he played with such joy and enthusiasm,” Cranston wrote.

He recalled watching the young actor develop during the filming of the series’ pilot in 2007.

“That kid was pretty raw when we started shooting the pilot in February of 2007, but little by little we watched him grow into a really fine actor,” he wrote.

Cranston also praised Mitte’s advocacy for performers with disabilities, saying he had used his experience on the show to champion greater representation.

He reflected on their relationship beyond the series, revealing that they had exchanged messages in recent weeks while trying to arrange a lunch.

“All that promise and potential now is such a loss,” Cranston wrote.

“I’ll miss you, son,” he added.
