Mr. Joel Worrall, Executive Headmaster Of King's School The Crown, was NileFM's guest On "The Big Breakfast" with Rob and Nadine and he told us all about the vision and values of King's School The Crown.
Can you share a bit about the vision and values of the King's School The Crown?&nbsp;
We are part of the Inspired Education Group, over 115 premium international schools worldwide, and we inspire simply to be at the forefront of international education, not just in Egypt, but all over the world.
We think it's more than just a name, it's more than just a brand that goes on the outside of the building it's about what happens inside, and we're all about the three pillars of education, these are the bedrock of what we are doing. Our pillars are academics, academics are fundamental and it's the root of our children getting to the top, but also those pillars include sport and performing arts, and the combination of those three, we think, results in the highest academic outputs as a result of combining those factors and not just focusing on the academics.&nbsp;
You mentioned that the Inspired Group has a longstanding reputation for excellence, how does the King's School The Crown carry on this tradition while catering to the local community as well?&nbsp;
It's important that we say that this is not a network, this is a longstanding worldwide group of the top schools performing at the highest level in different education systems in the world, and in The Crown, we are incredibly proud to be here, we incredibly proud to be part of the Egyptian culture, it's part of our school identity, but equally we are determined and focused on the British education system, it is known around the world to be one of the stronger points of access to the top universities. We are really focused on how to get that strength from the group, and how do we build on the British education whilst being rooted in the culture that we love.&nbsp;
Every week I speak with 115 heads around the world, and we learn in advance, for example, we talked about COVID earlier, and as COVID moved around the world our schools were learning, and they were learning from each other, so the next one that was coming line just had a little more advantage from the previous ones, and we built this extraordinary online learning system, that now benefits over 6000 children.&nbsp;
The learning environment is often a reflection of the school's ethos, so how do the school's facilities at King School The Crown support the vision of nurturing a well-rounded individual and fostering both academic excellence and personal development?&nbsp;
When we built the school, we thought about how the children move around the school, we thought about the classroom design, we thought about the age and stage, and our external facilities like an indoor 25-meter swimming pool, and a FIFA-accredited football pitch, and all of those facilities are first class, indoor and outdoor, and it should be because we're a premium international school.&nbsp;
But the truth is, the heart of the school is the teachers, and my teachers are exceptional practitioners of this profession, and I think all of those teachers go above and beyond regardless of where they're working. The fact that we have all of these additional resources and international facilities just makes their job that much more fulfilling.
One of the things that we do is that we bring these teachers in from around our schools, where we know the quality of their learning, and we know the quality of their background and their education.&nbsp;
How does the school's commitment to students' well-being and personal growth manifest in its day-to-day practices?
I don't think you can differentiate between the two, they're not mutually exclusive. In fact, fundamental to academic success is pastoral care and welfare, and we know as parents that if our children are happy, we can parent easily, and the same applies in the teaching environment, if they're happy if they feel safe, if they feel cared for, and if they feel genuinely liked, they give more, and they get better results.&nbsp;
Our young students at King's know that the older students are there to help them, they know that those students have a responsibility to lead by example and to be ambassadors, we have a thriving house system, along the lines of Harry Potter, and it's not just for football competition, houses are more than that, houses are a vertical family of brothers and sisters from the whole range of school, where the older ones can teach and inspire and be role models, and the younger ones have got an opportunity to see a middle ground between the teachers and their peers.&nbsp;
As part of the Inspired Educational Group of schools, How does King's School The Crown connect students to international opportunities and influence students' learning experience and future readiness?&nbsp;
We've two programs that run every year throughout our group of schools one of those programs is a global summer camp, and those summer camps are open to all Inspired students, and we do things like skiing in Switzerland, we have a NASA camp where children will experience the wonders of NASA, there are sport-focused camps in places like Spain and Salto Grande, and that's summer camp, it's an experiential, primarily enjoyment link with other culture and people.&nbsp;
But then one of the fabulous things that make us really unique is our global exchange program, and it exchanges with a number of our residential boarding schools, running exactly the same system of education, children could go to the UK, Central Europe, Australia, Vietnam or many countries around the world for six weeks, eight weeks, sometimes a term, and be immersed in that school educational life, not for a holiday, but for education, the same program of study, the same quality of learning but perhaps students are looking for a university abroad, perhaps they got wider family in a particular country and they want to go and spend time, or even they just got a passion for a language, and being able to spend that time in the school, parents are reassured that the residential care is first class and in-line with our expectations, and at the same time they know that the education is unbroken, they're not taking eight weeks out of school, they're learning at the same time.&nbsp;
Early years education is a critical foundation, How does the King's School The Crown adopt international practices in early learning to create a nurturing and stimulating environment for young learners?&nbsp;
Our early learning school is designed for children from zero to five years old.&nbsp;
Our system of early learning is bespoke to Inspired Education, it's&nbsp;underpinned by a system of learning called&nbsp;Reggio Emilia, which comes from Italy, and it focuses on the child, at the very heart of it, and so it's a program of direct learning based around experience and letting the child explore learning with a teacher, underpins the teaching to what the child is learning, not the other way around.&nbsp;
So you can teach a topic with any activity, but if you get engagement first and then learning second, the learning will always be better.&nbsp;
School's strength often lies in educators, could you share how King's School The Crown ensures a team of highly qualified international teachers?
We handpick our teachers, it's very important for the whole group that our teachers represent Inspired education and they do that worldwide.&nbsp;
So, none of our teaching staff get through the first round of their applications without having a certain level of qualification, and a certain level of experience, they must have a post-graduate teaching qualification which is national equivalent.
That's the base level, they also must have a minimum of three years of experience teaching in the British international structure, and at that point they can be interviewed, they're assisted globally, so I know when they come to me that I'm dealing with the best of the best.&nbsp;
About 60% of my teachers are from the UK, but I also have teachers from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Ireland, South Africa, and more, the key is excellence.&nbsp;&nbsp;
What Advice would you offer parents who are about to embark on a child educational journey at King's School The Crown, and also how they can best support their children's growth and development during this important phase of their lives?&nbsp;&nbsp;
It's about talking to us about your expectations as a parent and what are your aspirations for your children, let's be really clear from the start about where we're going, and then we can put a plan in place to help get there, you get honest responses from me about what we deliver as a school, and about what that means in terms of time outside of school, in terms of commitment within the school, and my expectations of parents.&nbsp;
Be open and honest about your child parents have had all of the experience with their children, right from birth, and because of that experience they know their children the best, sharing that information about their child means that we get the most detailed and relevant strategies to help progress learning, that means your children can flourish.
And then the last thing I would say is toward the campus, come and see exactly what your child will be walking through, come and see exactly their educational journey, schools are about feelings, you feel like your child and your family would be part of that community, and you see your child growing through that journey, it's not a single purchase, this is an every day, overtime collaboration.
