Micky and Nadine welcomed Keith Waters, Chairman and Commissioner of the MENA Golf Tour, to NileFM for an in-depth look at the first leg of the Egypt Golf Series at New Giza Golf Club.
Waters shared his excitement about the tournament. &ldquo;We've already had a great tournament so far. The cooperation from the golf club here, New Giza, the director, all the staff involved, it's been absolutely flawless. We've been made so welcome. The tournament is running incredibly well. The leaders are now onto the last nine holes. We call it the back nine, where the action really is to see who's going to win the tournament today.&rdquo;
He highlighted the international talent on display. &ldquo;The top 10, 15 players have scored exceptionally well. On the first day, we had Zan Luca Stern shoot a 64, which is an incredible score. He is currently tying the lead with a young Englishman called Charlie Crockett. Charlie has flown all the way from Texas. He&rsquo;s been at College Village in America for the last three years. He called me about two weeks ago and said, &lsquo;I&rsquo;m coming to Egypt.&rsquo; I said, great, get yourself here. And I saw him two days ago. He was a bit jet lagged flying from Texas, but he&rsquo;s in the lead as well.&rdquo;
When asked about Egypt&rsquo;s role in the MENA Golf Tour and its impact on golf in the Middle East, Waters explained, &ldquo;Obviously, the MENA Golf Tour is working very closely with the Egyptian Golf Federation. This is the first tournament of the Egypt Golf Series, which is a new initiative for them. We&rsquo;re delighted to be involved. They have been great supporters of the event and it's just the first of four events in the country. The tournament is running absolutely flawlessly. The live scoring&rsquo;s working perfectly. The golf course is playing superbly. It&rsquo;s been cured perfectly for this tournament. We&rsquo;ve been very lucky with the weather. We&rsquo;ve had no rain, it&rsquo;s been sunny. The transportation, the hotels have been absolutely excellent. Everyone has really enjoyed themselves.&rdquo;
Waters also stressed the value for local talent. &ldquo;We have five Egyptian players playing today in the last day. The experience they&rsquo;re gaining by playing with these international players from around the world is invaluable for them. It&rsquo;ll be interesting to see how well they do on the final day today.&rdquo;
He praised the seamless organization of the tour. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s almost been flawless. It&rsquo;s been difficult to find any real issues with anything in terms of logistics. It&rsquo;s been superb. We&rsquo;re delighted and we hope the next three weeks will be the same.&rdquo;
For newcomers to the sport, Waters had a simple message: &ldquo;On the weekends, it&rsquo;s completely open to anybody who wants to come and watch the golf. It&rsquo;d be great to have more fans here. We&rsquo;ve got quite a lot of people around the clubhouse, so hopefully they&rsquo;re going to stay for the end of the tournament and see an exciting finish. Get yourself to New Giza Golf Club and come and watch golf. The weather&rsquo;s amazing. The vibes are amazing. We&rsquo;re joined by some amazing people here, world-renowned players, people from all over the world. So this is the place to be, whether you are a golf fan or you&rsquo;re not a golf fan.&rdquo;
