Under clear skies at Madinaty Golf Club, the final leg of the MENA Golf Tour unfolded as more than a competitive contest. It became a showcase of ambition, youth, and the steady determination shaping the future of golf in Egypt.
NileFM brought listeners to the centre of the action as presenters Mickey and Nadine broadcast live from the course. From a mobile studio overlooking the fairways, combining tournament coverage with personal stories from players at different stages of their careers.
Among those featured was 15-year-old Egyptian golfer Abdelrahman El-Dafrawy, whose progress has drawn attention despite his age.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s been a very good experience for me, especially playing in these big tournaments with professionals at such a young age,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m really happy about that.&rdquo;
For him, stepping onto courses alongside seasoned players is not just about competing. It is about building a future.
From Tennis Courts to Fairways
El-Dafrawy first discovered golf at the age of five after noticing a course near his home at Allegria in Sheikh Zayed.
&ldquo;I used to play tennis, but when I saw the golf course, I wanted to try it. Once I did, I just got hooked to the game,&rdquo; he recalled.
The early start quickly translated into success. Over the years, he has claimed victories at the Pan Arab Championship, won several Egyptian Opens, and competed internationally. Now, his eyes are firmly set on collegiate golf in the United States.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m looking to play Division 1 golf and hopefully compete at high levels like the NCAA. Turning professional is definitely a goal.&rdquo;
Changing Perceptions Around Golf
While golf is sometimes viewed as exclusive or intimidating, El-Dafrawy believes the sport deserves a fresh perspective.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s not a cheap sport, but it is very underrated. Many people misunderstand golf and think it&rsquo;s only for older players,&rdquo; he said.
He remembers friends who once teased him for choosing the sport.
&ldquo;Those same people are playing golf now. They told me they regret not starting earlier.&rdquo;
His advice to young athletes is simple: give it a chance.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s better to start young, but it&rsquo;s never too late. Some players even turn professional in their teenage years.&rdquo;
Egypt&rsquo;s Hidden Gems
Having played across Egypt and abroad, El-Dafrawy speaks with pride about the country&rsquo;s courses.
&ldquo;They are hidden gems. Tourists are always amazed by the quality, how well the courses are maintained, and even the price,&rdquo; he explained. &ldquo;If a course like this existed in Dubai, Europe, or the US, it would easily be considered a country club. There is so much untapped potential here.&rdquo;
Lessons Beyond the Leaderboard
Although he did not make the cut at this year&rsquo;s MENA Golf Tour stop, El-Dafrawy views the experience as a crucial step forward rather than a setback.
&ldquo;Playing the tour is very important. I tried to make the cut and I didn&rsquo;t, but what matters is working my way up and achieving it next time,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s the experience that counts.&rdquo;
As the broadcast wrapped and the final swings echoed across the course, one thing became clear: the future of Egyptian golf is already walking the fairways.
