FIFA has approved a series of regulatory and financial changes ahead of the 2026 World Cup, including amendments to disciplinary rules and a significant increase in payments for participating teams.
The decisions were confirmed by FIFA during a Council meeting ahead of the 76th FIFA Congress in Canada. The tournament is scheduled to begin on 11 June 2026.
USD 871 Million Allocated To Teams
FIFA has increased the financial distribution to the 48 participating teams by 15 percent, bringing the total allocation to USD 871 million.
Under the revised structure, preparation payments will rise from USD 1.5 million to USD 2.5 million per team, while qualification payments will increase from USD 9 million to USD 10 million.
Additional support, including subsidies for team delegations and enhanced ticketing allocations, will total more than USD 16 million.
FIFA said remaining revenues will continue to be redistributed to global football development through its 211 member associations.
Yellow Card Rule Changes Introduced
The governing body has also approved changes to disciplinary rules for the tournament. Single yellow cards will be cancelled after the group stage and again after the quarter-finals, reducing the risk of players missing later knockout matches due to accumulation.
New Player Conduct Regulations
Further updates include new rules addressing player behaviour, including measures relating to players leaving the field in protest at refereeing decisions, and guidance on covering the mouth when speaking to opponents during confrontations.
FIFA said the changes form part of efforts to modernise competition regulations ahead of what is expected to be the most expanded edition of the World Cup.
