Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett has revealed that she is planning to step away from Hollywood and possibly quit acting altogether. Speaking in a new interview with Radio Times, the 55-year-old Black Bag star said, &ldquo;My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting. There are a lot of things I want to do with my life.&rdquo;
The announcement comes just a month after the release of Black Bag, adding fuel to speculation about her future in the industry. Blanchett, who began her film career in 1997 and has since earned two Oscars for The Aviator and Blue Jasmine, says she&rsquo;s long struggled with fame and her public image.
&ldquo;When you go on a talk show, or even here now, and then you see soundbites of things you&rsquo;ve said, pulled out and italicized, they sound really loud,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not that person.&rdquo;
The Lord of the Rings actress also admitted that being in the public eye never felt quite natural. &ldquo;I make more sense in motion,&rdquo; she noted. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s been a long time to remotely get comfortable with the idea of being photographed.&rdquo;
Blanchett&mdash;who shares four children with husband Andrew Upton&mdash;said she often feels like an outsider, despite her decades of success. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve always felt like I&rsquo;m on the periphery of things, so I&rsquo;m always surprised when I belong anywhere,&rdquo; she added.
While this isn't the first time she&rsquo;s hinted at a departure from the spotlight, her tone now feels more definitive. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve spent a lifetime getting comfortable with the feeling of being uncomfortable,&rdquo; she said, reflecting on her personal and professional journey.
Still, Blanchett maintains her signature wit about the possibility of a career pivot. &ldquo;I always thought, if the acting thing didn&rsquo;t work out, which it still might not, I would love to be a Foley artist,&rdquo; she joked in an earlier interview. &ldquo;One day I&rsquo;m going to grow up and get a proper job.&rdquo;
Whether she&rsquo;s truly ready to step away or simply testing new creative waters, one thing is clear: Cate Blanchett remains a force, on or off screen.
