Egyptian director and screenwriter Daoud Abdel Sayed passed away days ago at the age of 79, leaving behind a rich and deeply influential cinematic legacy. One of the most thoughtful voices in Egyptian cinema, Abdel Sayed was known for his philosophical storytelling, complex characters, and bold exploration of society, identity, power, and freedom.
Born in Cairo in 1946, Abdel Sayed studied film directing at the Higher Institute of Cinema. He began his career as an assistant director to some of Egypt&rsquo;s most prominent filmmakers, most notably Youssef Chahine, before carving out a distinctive cinematic language that set him apart as one of Egypt&rsquo;s most respected auteurs.
His work earned wide recognition, including the State Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2004 and the State Appreciation Award in the Arts in 2012 from the Supreme Council of Culture.

El-Sa&lsquo;alik (1985)
Abdel Sayed&rsquo;s debut feature as a director introduced audiences to his bold social vision. Starring Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, Nour El-Sherif, and Youssra, the film follows two close friends struggling with poverty who make a dangerous decision that propels them into sudden wealth. As success reshapes their lives, their friendship is tested by greed, ambition, and betrayal. The film offers a sharp critique of materialism and moral compromise in modern society.
Daoud Abdel Sayed&rsquo;s impact on Arab cinema is undeniable.
