Some actors become household names through leading roles, while others leave a lasting impression through memorable supporting performances. Richard Riehle belonged to the latter group. The American character actor, whose career spanned film, television and theatre, appeared in more than 400 productions over five decades. He died of natural causes in Los Angeles on 15 October 2026, aged 78, Variety reported.
For many viewers, Riehle will be remembered as Tom Smykowski, the Initech employee in the 1999 cult comedy 'Office Space' who proudly describes himself as a man with “people skills”. His character’s workplace frustrations and unexpected change of fortune made him one of the film’s most memorable figures.
Beyond the offices of Initech, however, Riehle built an extensive screen career spanning crime dramas, thrillers, science fiction and comedy. He appeared alongside some of Hollywood’s best-known actors, often making a lasting impression in supporting roles.
Born in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, on 12 May 1948, Riehle began his acting career in regional theatre before making his screen debut in 'Rooster Cogburn' (1975), starring John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn. His subsequent credits included the historical war drama 'Glory,' the crime film 'Casino,' the thriller The Fugitive, the science fiction drama 'The Man from Earth' and the comedy 'Bridesmaids.'
From playing supporting roles in acclaimed dramas to portraying a beleaguered office worker in 'Office Space,' Riehle demonstrated a versatility that made him a familiar presence on screen. His performances often brought humour, personality and depth to characters who might otherwise have remained in the background.
Here are seven memorable films that showcase the breadth of Richard Riehle’s career and his contribution to film.
1. Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013)
Riehle appeared as lawyer Barry Farnsworth in the horror film Texas ‘Chainsaw 3D, ‘directed by John Luessenhop and starring Alexandra Daddario, Dan Yeager, and Scott Eastwood. The film follows a young woman who travels to Texas to claim an inheritance, only to uncover a dark family history involving Leatherface. The role added a horror credit to Riehle’s wide-ranging filmography.
2. Bridesmaids (2011)
In Paul Feig’s hit comedy, Riehle played mechanic Bill Cozbi, appearing alongside Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph. Although the film revolves around the chaotic friendship and wedding preparations of its female leads, Riehle added another memorable credit to a career filled with supporting appearances.
3. The Man from Earth (2007)
Moving from comedy to science fiction, Riehle played Dr. Will Gruber in this dialogue-driven film about a university professor who claims to have lived for thousands of years. As his colleagues question his extraordinary story, the film explores history, belief, and the limits of human understanding.
4. Office Space (1999)
Few of Riehle’s roles became as widely recognized as Tom Smykowski in Mike Judge’s cult workplace comedy. As an employee whose confidence in his “people skills” cannot save him from corporate downsizing, Tom becomes part of the film’s satire of office culture. His story takes an unexpected turn after a car accident leads to a substantial financial settlement, making his character one of the film’s enduring comic highlights.
5. Casino (1995)
Riehle also appeared in Martin Scorsese’s crime drama ‘Casino,’ starring Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, and Joe Pesci. Set against the excesses and criminal dealings of Las Vegas, the film offered another opportunity for the character actor to contribute to a large ensemble cast.
6. The Fugitive (1993)
In this suspense-filled thriller, Harrison Ford stars as Dr. Richard Kimble, a surgeon wrongly convicted of murdering his wife who escapes custody and attempts to uncover the truth. Riehle appears as a prison guard in a story driven by the pursuit of justice and the race to expose the real killer.
7. Free Willy (1993)
Riehle appeared in the family adventure film ‘Free Willy,’ starring Jason James Richter as Jesse, a troubled boy who forms a special bond with Willy, an orca held in captivity at a marine amusement park. The film follows Jesse’s efforts to help Willy escape and return to the ocean, exploring themes of friendship, compassion, and the importance of protecting wildlife.
From the absurdities of office life to stories of war, friendship, and extraordinary possibilities, Riehle’s filmography crossed genres and generations. He may not always have occupied the centre of the screen, but his career illustrates how character actors can help make a story memorable, one role at a time.
